LRI-FRI-FFTC symposium features hi-tech livestock and aquaculture production

The increasing demand for the region’s livestock and aquaculture sectors has recently led to tightened competition for natural resources. Both sectors are not only regarded as important protein sources, they also have the same challenges like their demand for safe and nutritious food, labor shortage, aging farmers and fisher folks, climate change and emerging animal and fish diseases. Because of this, the promotion for the region’s research and development (R&D) and adoption of ICT technologies like sensors, IoTs, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), agricultural robotics are seen to pave the way to improve production efficiency, strengthen farm biosecurity and reduce the workloads of farmers and fishermen.

The upcoming hybrid symposium on “Intelligent Production of Livestock Industry and Aquaculture,” on September 30, 2022, which is a joint undertaking of FFTC, Taiwan’s Livestock Research Institute (LRI) and the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) of the Council of Agriculture and their partner WES Expo aim to enhance the extension and promotion of intelligent operations for farmers and fisher folks in the Asian and Pacific region, exchange breeding knowledge and experiences on livestock industry and aquaculture, strengthen international cooperation on intelligence operations and help increase the income of farmers and fisher folks in the region.

Organizers of the hybrid symposium will invite  international and local speakers to include related experts from partner institutes and counties, officers of FFTC’s member and partner countries to share their countries’ policy on R&D and adoption of intelligent technologies in livestock industry and aquaculture, and around 100 (onsite) and 1,000 online participants to include researchers, local and national government officials and private sectors. The symposium will have the following themes under three major sessions:

  1. Problems and solutions on small-scale livestock and aquaculture industries;
  2. Success cases in the application of advanced intelligent technologies; and
  3. Policy measures for transformation to intelligent production: challenges and possible solutions.
