- Newsletter 208: FFTC’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
- All is set for FFTC’s 25th TAC meeting
For the very first time since the first FFTC Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting was held on March 7-8, 1977, this year’s TAC Meeting will be convened via videoconference for only three hours on July 21, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both the FFTC management and the 11 TAC members from eight countries have agreed to hold the meeting online. On that day, the FFTC management, together with the two Taiwan TAC members, will be at the conference room of the Bureau of Animal Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ), while the other ten members will be joining the videoconference from their respective countries in Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
In the said meeting, FFTC Director Dr. Su-San Chang and Deputy Director Dr. Akira Hasebe will take turns in reporting the activities of the Center for the past two years and the new FFTC Strategic Action Plan for 2021-2024, which took about seven months to make. Dr. Chang will also deliver a presentation on “Charting New Directions for FFTC,” part of which will be on creating new opportunities for partnerships, the Center’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and FFTC’s future challenges. The TAC members, on the other hand, are expected to evaluate the Center’s programs, identify needs for future programs and give advice on how to strengthen the Center’s cooperation with other agencies in the Asian Pacific Region.
The FFTC-TAC, which meets every two years, is made up of distinguished agricultural scientists and officers in the region and serves to provide advices to the Center. A bit of trivia: The first TAC meeting was held in Taipei on March 7-8, 1977. It was attended by nine scientists representing Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan. It was organized by six Professional FFTC Staff members.
