On May 11-15, 2015, Researcher Mr. Chia Chen Pan, of the Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, receives a certificate of attendance from FFTC Director Dr. Yu-Tsai Huang at the closing ceremony of the training course on “Smart Use of Fertilizers to Improve Crop Production and Soil Conservation.”
It was an honor for me to be invited to attend an international training course on “Smart Use of Fertilizers to Improve Crop Production and Soil Conservation.” During the five-day training course we heard many crop fertilizer management lectures from Taiwan researchers, and the contents were really eye-opening to me. They shared their field/ orchard experiences in using fertilizers, such as how to use the dripping system, the NPK ratio during different growth stages, soil water management and microbial fertilizer. And most important of all, they were trying to increase the fertilizer efficiency to face the effects of climate change and the continuous decrease of fertilizer resource.
One of the most impressive activities we undertook was lab practicing and orchard visiting. We operated the rice and grape sampling, and soil analysis including extraction, nitrogen-micro diffusion method and phosphate-colorimetric method. The researchers also demonstrated how to tell different soil texture by hands and eyes. We visited the grape and pitaya orchards in Changhua county. The farmers said the connection between farmers and research stations was important because we can exchange experiences to each other. We were also very excited to harvest grapes by ourselves, and they tasted really good.
