Health Management of Pathogen-Free Citrus Seedlings for the Rehabilitation of the Citrus Industry From Serious Epidemic of HLB and Virus Diseases in the Philippines (Year 3)

Background

In the early 1990s, FFTC launched the first project to transfer Taiwan’s advanced technology on HLB management to Vietnam in order to rehabilitate the devastated citrus industry in this country. Since then, the project has been expanded to various Asian countries. The HLB disease has been still devastating major citrus industry in the ASPAC region , and currently becom es serious threat to the citrus industry in the Philippines.

In this project, the primary emphasis is placed on the establishment of PF citrus foundation and nursery system , and concurrently technological transfer of innovative indexing techniques of the HLB disease in the Philippine s . Technological transfer for the health management of PF seedlings replanted in the orchards is a key technique for the successful rehabilitation of the citrus industry.

Objectives for Year 3:

  • To successively improve PF citrus foundation and nursery system for PF-seedling production in therms of strict virus-indexing and increas ed PF citrus germplasms via STG, in Baguio and Los Banos NCRDC, BPI .
  • To help Los Banos NCRDC enhance the activities of citrus virus indexing laboratory and PF citrus foundation depository for rehabilitation of citrus industry in the serious HLB epidemic low-land areas .
  • To promote r esearch collaboration on epidemiology of HLB and virus diseases in the Philippines for improving health management of PF-seedling cultivat ed in the field , in particular, field sanitation , IPM of vector insects and appropriate cultural practices .
  • To p romot e mass production and field demonstration of PF-citrus seedlings for efficient rehabilitation of citrus industry in the Philippines and other ASPAC countries .

Major accomplishments:

December 2013, FFTC consultant for citrus health management Professor Hong-Ji Su was scheduled to conduct a training on “Indexing Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) and Virus Diseases and Health Management of Citrus Orchards with Pathogen Free Citrus Seedlings” in the Philippines.

Professor Su was also scheduled to visit Baguio, Los Baños and Davao City to oversee the research work and laboratory experiments on citrus done by the Philippines’ DA-BPI staff
