Modern Corn Cultivation Technology Transfer in Caraga Region, Philippines (Year 2)

There is enormous potential for the Caraga Region to develop a comprehensive corn production program toward providing improved livelihood opportunities for its small-scale corn farmers. To realize this potential, modern cultivation techniques and introduction of hybrid corn varieties were initiated in CY 2005 in order to raise the average yield per hectare, ensure sustainable production in prime corn lands, and address poverty by increasing the income of marginal corn farmers in the Caraga Region.

Objectives

The second year implementation of the project focuses on attaining the following specific objectives:

  1. To continue testing and selecting high yield Taiwan hybrid corn varieties, not only yellow corn (for feed), but also white corn (for table and stable food) at the site nearby the group farms.
  2. To organize and establish a 20 hectares group farming in corn production areas of the Caraga Region, incorporating the use Taiwan's F1 hybrid varieties;
  3. To promote local capacity-building among technicians, extensions workers, and leading farmers through the conduct of on-farm demonstrations/pilot testing, as well as training courses on modern corn cultivation techniques;
  4. To produce and disseminate extension materials on improved corn cultivation for practical use by extension workers and farmers.

Description of major activities (Year 2)

  1. Identification of farmer-cooperators and on-site demo farms based on the corn clustering of the DA-RFU 13.
  2. Conduct of Training Courses and On-Farm Demonstration for leading farmers and technicians/extension workers.
  3. To continue testing and selecting high yield Taiwan hybrid corn varieties in selected farm, using 0.5 hectare per crop season and two planting crops for next year.
  4. To arrange for a sorghum yield test site.

Expected output(s):

  1. Improved the average corn productivity of farmers in the Caraga Region from 1.77 MT/ha to 3.0 MT/ha;
  2. Recommended and extended appropriate cultivation system, incorporating the use of modern and sustainable corn production technologies and use of F1 hybrid varieties to corn farmers;
  3. Trained technicians, extensions workers, and leading farmers on modern corn cultivation techniques, and promoted adoption of introduced technologies; and
  4. Strengthened corn technology transfer mechanisms in the Caraga Region.
