FFTC Director Dr. Su-San Chang
As the new Director of FFTC, I am happy and deeply honored to serve this international organization and continue what has been started by my predecessors, especially in the area of information collection and dissemination on agricultural technologies and policies, aiming at improving farming efficiency, increasing farmers income and fostering sustainable agricultural and rural development in the Asian and Pacific region, for which the Center has always been known for.
I am lucky that as I start my tenure as Director of FFTC, the Center is also celebrating its 50th anniversary—a very auspicious occasion where we can all look back, celebrate our triumphs and victories as an organization and chart new challenges and directions for the future.
We are very much aware that these are challenging times for the agricultural community in the region. The impacts of climate change, lack of agricultural manpower and natural resources, and food insecurity with the growing population are just some of the many pressing issues which our Center is trying to address in the conduct of our activities. We are glad that this year, we have already finished drafting our “Strategic Action Plan Focusing on Holding our Workshops and Seminars in 2021-2024.” This action plan, which is basically made up of five program themes, will be the main guide that will help us prioritize our goals, maximize our resources, increase our effectiveness and help us make better decisions. This means that all our major activities for this year and the succeeding four years, will be underpinned based on the following five program themes: 1) increasing productivity by strengthening agricultural R&D and investments; 2) enhancing food value chains and consumer oriented production; 3) promoting climate-smart and resilient agriculture; 4) fostering circular agriculture; and 5) strengthening resource management and rural development.
I am therefore very thankful that we have the consistent and strong support of all our stakeholders, and country partner representatives in the region whose commitment and dedication to FFTC’s vision and mission are truly remarkable. Together with our equally dedicated members of our management and staff, I am very eager and looking forward to working with all of you as we make our humble contribution to help empower our small-scale farmers and create a more sustainable agriculture in the Asian Pacific region.
